National Grid: We Won’t Pay To Be Poisoned
2023-2024 News
Join us on June 2, 2024 for a multi-stop event as we raise awareness and demand the shutdown of National Grid's toxic fossil fuel depot in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. We aim to visualize a sustainable future for the 120-acre site and demonstrate community opposition to National Grid's destructive practices.
Event Schedule:
Part 1: Bicycles and Boats!
12:00 - 12:30 PM: Meet the team at Manhattan Avenue Park on Newtown Creek (1160 Manhattan Ave. Brooklyn on GPS) and prepare for the action-packed day ahead. Limited boat seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bike Ride: MEET HERE MAP
1:00 PM: Bike Ride for a Sustainable Brooklyn: Embark on a bicycle tour through North Brooklyn, spreading awareness about National Grid's toxic facility and promoting our shared vision for a sustainable, community-driven future. Banners along the Newtown Creek will highlight our united front against National Grid.
Part 2: Art-filled Community Rally and Little League Mudball Toss
3:00 PM: Rally at National Grid Facility: Join us at the corner of Vandervoort and Division for a spirited rally featuring music, performances, community speakers, and local elected officials. We will gather at the now-defunct Greenpoint Little League field to send a clear message that we will not pay to be poisoned. Rally: MEET HERE MAP
August 15, 2023: The Public Service Commission failed us today. Gas bills will soar by over $60/month, benefiting UK-based National Grid at our expense. Governor Hochul abandoned working-class New Yorkers, forcing them to choose between groceries and heat. The NY HEAT Act could have prevented this, but our leaders failed to act. Now, National Grid’s fracked gas infrastructure will lock us into using gas until 2080, violating NY climate laws and endangering vulnerable communities. It’s time for real action to move off fossil fuels before it's too late. (read the full statement)
March 16, 2023: We defeated the final leg of the pipeline and the LNG (liquefied ‘natural’ gas) vaporizers at their LNG depot at the apex of the pipeline route. This is a victory for everyone.
Ongoing: The fight to shut off the gas in the first four phases of the pipeline that National Grid connected to one of their smaller pipelines from the 1960s continues.
April 28, 2023: National Grid returned with a vengeance, proposing $4 billion of fracked gas infrastructure expansion. Groups are now organizing to fight this. Send a comment here to get involved.
