We won’t pay to be poisoned

What’s Going On?

National Grid has built 4 out of 5 phases of a massive fracked gas transmission pipeline in North Brooklyn. It is called the Metropolitan Reliability Infrastructure (MRI) or as we dub it, the North Brooklyn Pipeline.

This project is not a replacement of leaking pipelines, it is an expansion to charge us, the rate-payers, millions of dollars in rate hikes to fill its shareholders’ pockets.

National Grid recklessly continued construction while Covid-19 ravaged North Brooklyn communities and completed phases 1-4 of the project in November 2020. Dangerous fracked gas is now flowing in the pipeline from Brownsville to Bushwick.

Community activism has halted the construction of phase 5 of the pipeline through Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Brooklyn. If completed, the pipeline would directly connect to a liquefied gas (LNG) depot on Newtown Creek that National Grid is also trying to expand.

On March 16, 2023, we achieved our goal to stop phase 5 of the pipeline and LNG facility's additional liquefied ‘natural’ gas vaporizers.

We will not stop fighting until we get the gas shut off in phases 1-4 and prevent any expansion of fracked gas infrastructure in the future.

National Grid has now returned on April 28, 2023 asking for $4 Billion more for more fracked gas infrastructure.
